Taxidermy
School Course Description
| 4 hours |
Orientation: Including introductions,
course outline review, class schedule, tour of the work place, rules of
the course, general safety review, tool safety review, notebook and expectations,
history of taxidermy and taxidermy today. (Lesson 1) |

Bird Course: Skinning, fleshing, cleaning,
preparing forms, mounting,
positioning. (8 Lessons) (minimum of 3
mounts required other mounts optional) |
| 6 wks (240 hrs) |
Big Game Mounts: Measuring and skinning,
hide preparation (fleshing, salting), tanning, form altering techniques,
sculpting and prepping form, mounting horns and hide, finish work, plaques,
and hanging. (12 Lessons) (minimum of 3 mounts required other mounts optional) |
| 2 wks (80 hrs.) |
Rugs: Skinning, fleshing, cleaning,
tanning, stretching, preparing forms, mounting, backing, felting, prep
putty and paint. (7 Lessons)
Skull: Cleaning, boiling, bleaching and
mounting. (2 Lessons) |
| 1 wk (40 hrs) |
Base Work: General bases, plaques, habitat
bases, making rock, using natural materials, painting, balance and placement.
(7 Lessons) (2 habitat bases required – 1 bird base and one mammal base) |
| 3 days (24 hrs.) |
Business Course: Business set up,
license and requirements, State and
Federal regulations, invoices, receipts,
pricing, overhead, advertising, location, tools, and space. (Taught throughout
the course as appropriate.) |
| Other |
Use of tools (power & pneumatic),
skife knives, knife and scalpel use, fleshing wheel, easels, hangers, and
much more. |
Major power tools will be provided; saws,
sanders, large fleshers, tanning equipment, easels, tumblers and stretching
tables.
